Hostgator QuickInstall one-click installer

Hostgator in their blog post have announced that they have developed an in house script for oneclick installation of web software scripts. Because it is in-house faster updates are available. it is simular to Fantastico de luxe one-click installer. According to their post they offer free installation anyone having dedicated server or vps at Hostgator. Scripts included for fast installation are: blogs: wordpress, lifetype, b2evolution,, nucleus, content management systems: joomla, drupal, shopping carts: opencart, zencart, oscommerce and lots of other PHP scripts. Because it is still in beta stage youu may encounter bugs, for which you can submit ticket to hostgator support. As for user reviews, there are couple in host gator forum, showing good response.

Hostgator OSCommerce Shopping Cart

On a hostgator account you can create an online store with Oscommerce script. Oscommerce is PHP (web programming language) script that uses MySQL (database system) as a storage engine, free and licensed under GNU GPL license which gives you much freedom. It offers many features to merchants including many gateways for payments, unlimited products that may be categorized in unlimited categories, international languages, many purchase options and more. It is one of the oldest shopping cart software. The new version 3 will include many options including a new object-oriented design of core code. There are several forks based of Oscommerce most popular one is Zencart.

Hostgator SSL certificates

Hostgator supports both Shared SSL and dedicated SSL certificates. To access shared SSL use the following form:

https://server.hostgator.com/~cpaneluser/

where server is the name of the web server you are on. This is usually in this form gatorxxx where xxx are numbers, and can be found in your hostgator welcome email.
When you access the site this way a warning message may appear. Better option for you would be to buy dedicated SSL certificate from Hostgator. Hostgator sells Comodo certificates which are one of the most recognizable in the SSL industry offering up to 256 bit encryption and free installation. Please note that if you already have the business shared hosting plan you are entitled for free dedicated SSL certifacte as well as free dedicated IP address which is required for dedicated SSL. You may also buy SSL from third party but there is $10 installation fee.

SSL certificates

SSL certificates secure and encrypt the data that is traveling between your computer and the webserver. The standard way leaves the data in plain text and someone might read it while it travels. So if you have an online store or any other site where users enters important information (like credit cards, social number etc) you should have secure connection. SSL creates secure connection.

HostGator Ruby On Rails Review

Ruby on Rails (ROR) is Ruby programming language web framework for developing online applications for the world wide web (the Internet). It follows the MVC (Model View Controller pattern) for development of web applications. It is not popular as other programming languages but there are good number of developers who develop apps. Popular websites use Rails including: twitter.com (microblogging service), scribd.com (document-sharing website), github and many others.

HostGator Fantastico One-click installer

Fantastico de Luxe is commercial cPanel addon that HostGator offers for fast one-click installation of popular web applications. Included are: WordPress (blog software), Drupal – Content Management script (CMS), Joomla – CMS, shoppin carts – zencart, oscommerce, forums – phpbb, mybb, galleries, polls and other cool scripts. What Fantastico does is setup/create databases and users, create tables and setup initial settings and permissions for the selected software. Though Fantastico is popular one-click setup tool it is not recommended by most developers of the popular scripts mentioned. This is because the latest version of the software is not available always (or at least not immediately) after it is published. So you may end up installing old version with security holes and bugs. So the better way is to manually install the software. I use fantastico only when I am installing wordpress, and update it right after login with wordpress automatic update tool. HostGator Dedicated Server Review

Unlike shared hosting where you are limited by resources (CPU processing power, RAM memory) on dedicated server hosting those resources are dedicated only to you and you are only limited by the hardware. HostGator phpBB Review

phpBB (PHP Bulletin Board) is one of the best free open-source community forum creation software. It is built with php and uses mysql (postgresql, mssql, oracle and other database management systems are also supported) as a storage engine for forum data, settings, permissions, post, threads etc, licensed under the GNU General Public License. It supports module system with auth and other apis, where developers can easily add new features and settings to the standard ones. There is also a theme system where webmaster can add new themes and change the layout of the forum. Other standard features included are: user management with user registration, permissions per user/thread, administrators, moderators, usergroups, internationalization (available in several languages) with UTF-8 support. The current version is 3.06 released on 17 november 2010. Development for version 2 have ceased on 1 January 2009 and it is no longer supported. PHPBB3 is the best and the latest version offering much more features than the previous version, better security and optimizations. Many mods and templates are available free and paid ones. Before I installed vbulletin on my hostgator account I had phpbb version 2. I did not like that version so I bought vbulletin license. Currently I have vbulletin and though phpbb3 is very good forum software, I will not replace it with vbulletin because many features are same in both scripts.

HostGator Uptime for January 2010

I have free account at serviceuptime.com, where I have setup they to monitor my website – rsmkd.com uptime. The uptme for Janurary 2010 is 100%! This is great, by far it is the best uptime among all other hosting companies I have an account with.

You can see the report live here. Hostgator overall uptime for 2009 have been 99.977% which is excelleint in my opinion. This is well above the 99.9% mark host gator guarantees. The overall uptime measured so far is 99.972%, with average response time of 0,364 seconds, which is also excellent. My account with serviceuptime.com is setup to monitor my site every thirty minutes. In January 1696 checks have been made and none of the failed! I am very happy for my websites hosted with Host Gator. In about two months I will make 2 years with HostGator, and my experience with them have been and it is still great! They are really one of the best web hosting providers out there.

HostGator Vbulletin Forum Hosting Review

Vbulleting is a commercial web software written in PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor – the most popular web scripting language) for creating online communities (forums) produced by Jelsoft. Together with phpBB (php bulleting board) are the most popular forum software programs in the world. The latest version of vbulletin is 4 which comes with 2 more solutions – blog and cms (content management system) platform – all together called Vbulletin Suite.
